About the Bburago Red Bull RB20:

LAST FALL, THE RB19 was collecting records on a weekly basis. In the pantheon of all-time great racing cars, it earned a spot on the very top tier. Those plaudits include: most victories in a season (21), highest percentage of wins (95.5%) and most points (860), as well as a clutch of driver records for Mr. Verstappen. With no significant regulatory upheaval, there wasn’t much reason to expect change for 2024—but the vehicle has been radically improved, and not just the natural evolution of nip and tuck that refines and tidies a concept.

The RB20 also features genuinely new elements—not always to huge immediate advantage, but sometimes just to introduce a concept with greater potential to exploit going forward. You can’t improve on perfection—but in truth no F1 car, not even the best, hits that mark.

NOSE JOB – The nose cone of the RB20 has been extended slightly forward over the main plane of the front wing. This area of the car is heavily regulated, with prescribed geometry and stringent crash- testing specifications that limit design freedom—but even small changes here can have a significant impact on directing airflow around and under the car.

SLIMLINE SIDEPODS – Part of the fun of viewing launch cars is trying to see what isn’t there. The RB20 featured some very dark areas around the front of the sidepods, with shadows on the renders and crypt-like lighting for the real deal. When the car finally emerged blinking into the sunlight of Bahrain, we saw a completely new arrangement of cooling inlets, with a small horizontal slot under a new lip at the top, separated from a vertical slot below, suggesting some very complex airflow within the sidepod.

UNDERCUT – Perhaps the most distinctive departure from the RB19 relates to this vertical slot. It hints at more compact (and thus, presumably more efficient) radiators mounted lower than before, lowering the center of gravity, and also creating an astonishingly large undercut. The sidepod tapers sharply inward above the floor, speeding up airflow through the channel created and generating more downforce.

THE FLOOR – What lies beneath? This is the big unknown with the RB20, given that the public and media can’t see it, and the team is in no hurry to lift the car and let everyone take a picture. What we do know is that the floor edges have seen cambers changed and more detail introduced to generate more local loads. The team acknowledges that, hidden from view, it continues to optimize the main body of the floor to extract more load as its understanding of pressure distribution improves.

REAR DECK – The compact packaging in the sidepods and under the driver, plus the tighter arrangement of coolers and radiators packaged around the engine, shunts everything forward enough to allow the rear bodywork to taper down early, creating a larger void ahead of the rear axle. This allows the team to accelerate airflow and get more bang for the buck from the diffuser and rear-wing assembly.

IN-SEASON TWEAKS – One key to mounting a strong title challenge is staying at the sharp end of the grid—and in that regard, in-season car development is critical. For example, the RB20’s cooling package received a tweak in Japan, with another small inlet added at the top of the sidepod, which will allow the team to better manage cooling, airflow and drag according to track conditions. At the same time, the section for louvered gills was removed from the bodywork behind. Sealing this section of bodywork, relying just on air exiting via the engine cover “cannons” and a further rearward set of gills, allows the team to better separate this hot “waste” air from the useful high-energy airflow that supercharges downforce
