Description
Tuned by John Cooper, the Mini Cooper S Works cars brought home a number of international victories from its first year in competition in 1962. This Mini Cooper S was entered into the 1964 Monte Carlo Rally event where Hopkirk & Liddon went on to claim Mini’s first Monte Carlo victory.
They entered the race with a new and even more powerful car: the new Mini Cooper S had a larger engine which displaced 1071 cc, developing a maximum output of 70 bhp. The higher top speed of 99 mph (160 km/h) and quicker acceleration – 0-60 mph (100 km/h) in 13 seconds – promised to make the Mini Cooper S more competitive.
Before the days of points and classes, crews were handicapped according to engine output. With small engine capacity, the Mini Cooper S incurred the least time/handicap penalties. The largest penalties were incurred by the Ford Falcons and were measured in minutes. So even though the Mini of Hopkirk & Liddon finished 17 seconds behind the leading Ford of Bo Ljungfeldt, they were still the winners!
